The New Castle Area School Food Service Department is up and running again for another school year.

The Wellness Policies that are mandated by the Federal Government, are in full swing and for us to be in total compliance with all of the new regulations we have discontinued many items this year and have started to purchase healthier items, but as we all know with all of these changes comes higher prices for healthier foods and beverages

Some of the changes at the Hurricane Café include:

• All beverages will have less then 2 grams of sugar per serving unless naturally occurring sugars
• All milk will be 2% milk fat or less
• All snack items are baked items or items made with fruit juice or fruit.
• All ice cream products are either low fat or contain no more then 25% sugar by weight.
• All cake items will be sugar free or contain no more then 25% sugar by weight.
• We have available this year for lunch and breakfast products that are made with whole grain breading
• We have changed from regular buns and bread to whole grain bread products for sandwiches
• Pizza will be made with whole grain shells.
• We will be offering more fruits and vegetables

We have maintained the lunch and breakfast prices for another year but when students purchase the new healthier items ala carte they will notice an increase in price for those items. We have also been forced to increase prices because of the oil market. The same oil that is so expensive is used to produce a lot of food items and supplies in addition to the fuel surcharges place on every purchase
