Maria Cade is Lawrence County's Distinguished Young Woman!
New Castle junior Maria Cade was awarded the honor of being Lawrence County's Distinguished Young Woman on Saturday, May 20th, 2017 at Westminster College. 24 young women from all over Lawrence County were finalists who competed in the annual competition and were judged on their interviews, scholarship, talent, fitness, and self-expression. Maria has a cumulative GPA of 4.64 and would like to attend New York University for Broadcast Journalism. For her talent, she performed "Con Te Partiro (Time to Say Goodbye)." In addition to winning the overall competition, she scored the highest in the interview, scholarship, and talent categories, as well as was recognized for having the highest Math SAT score. Maria's win marks the first time a student from New Castle has won the competition in nearly 20 years.

New Castle was well represented at the competition this year. Juniors Kalle Eggleston, Kelly Green, and Ashley Kohnen were also finialists and gave outstanding performances in the various categories. Kalle demonstrated her robotics skills, which she learned through NCASD's STEAM Program; Kelly performed a beautiful dance routine; and Ashley played an intricate clarinet piece. You all made us NC Proud!

"Every Election Matters" Video Contest

Mr. Shaftic's AP US History class partnered with Mr. Cowart's Video Production class recently to enter in the "Every Election Matters" Video Contest. The contest is presented annually by the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania.

Challenging students in new and unique ways is a staple of the New Castle High School curriculum.  Therefore, for this project, the AP US History students teamed up with members of the Video Production class to develop production strategies and create suitable videos for the contest. This cooperative learning experience allowed the students to showcase their talents in a variety of formats. Students began the project by brainstorming together in New Castle High School's modern "MakerSpace," which is located in the school's STEAM wing.  This room is used to encourage creative process in a collaborative manner.
