"Every Election Matters" Video Contest

Mr. Shaftic's AP US History class partnered with Mr. Cowart's Video Production class recently to enter in the "Every Election Matters" Video Contest. The contest is presented annually by the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania.

Challenging students in new and unique ways is a staple of the New Castle High School curriculum.  Therefore, for this project, the AP US History students teamed up with members of the Video Production class to develop production strategies and create suitable videos for the contest. This cooperative learning experience allowed the students to showcase their talents in a variety of formats. Students began the project by brainstorming together in New Castle High School's modern "MakerSpace," which is located in the school's STEAM wing.  This room is used to encourage creative process in a collaborative manner.

VEX Robotics Championship

On Saturday, March 4th, New Castle High School Robotics Teams competed against twenty-four other teams from across Pennsylvania at the Western PA State VEX Robotics Championship at the Sarah Heinz House in Pittsburgh, PA. This year’s VEX robotics competitions involved robots competing in a 12-foot-by-12-foot field with a fence dividing teams. The object is for the student-built and programmed robots to throw “stars” and “cubes” over a fence and into their opponent's zone to earn points. Teams can also earn points by attaching their robot to a bar in the corner of the field and picking itself up, which is called “hanging.”

After launching its robotics competition program for the first year, New Castle High School Team “16101E: 005” was awarded the prestigious “Tournament Finalists” Award. The award celebrates the team as the tournament Runner-Up and honors the team's accomplishment of advancing to the Tournament Finals alongside their alliances. New Castle Robotics Team “16101E” consists of six students: Ryan Hunyadi, Ricky Zheng, Matthew Ball, Anton Green, Emily Brightshue, and Morgan Daily.

Additionally, both New Castle Robotics Teams “16101A: Alpha” and “16101D: New Castle SD” were awarded the honorable “Tournament Semi-Finalists” Award. The award celebrates the team's accomplishment of tieing for third place and their advancement to the Tournament Semi-Finals alongside their alliances. Team members for “16101A” include: Joey Pauletich, Rachel Lyden, Dasianae Florence, James Thompson, and Jade Bodie. Team members for “16101D” include: Arielle Recchione, TeAsia Stewart, Evan Brown, Kerrionna Lyles, Micah Killion, and Dylan McClaren.

NC Students Participate in an Engineering Job Shadow

Four New Castle students, John Brown, Jade Clark, Carly DiPietro, and Levi Green, chaperoned by Mr. Carley, had the opportunity to job shadow engineers at Ellwood Quality Steel on Thursday, March 2, 2017. They had the opportunity to tour the mill and present to the engineers and other local schools about the possibility of a space elevator in the future. Although they did not win first place against the local schools, they were able to learn about the different job opportunities that are available to engineers. One of the highlights of the tour was when there was molten steel being poured into the Electric Arc Furnace. The students said it was a good experience that helped them figure out the careers they want to pursue.
