West Side Primary
Welcome Back Print

Welcome to West Side Primary Center as we begin the 2009-2010 school year!  I anticipate this will be another wonderful year for the students, parents, and staff.  I feel very fortunate to be a part of this outstanding school community, and I am excited to begin another year with your children.

It is with great pleasure that I congratulate the parents, staff and students of West Side Primary Center for the outstanding PSSA scores received for the 2008-2009 school year.  Although the PSSA is administered to only third grade students, the support that you, the parents, provide to your children and this teaching staff from grade one on is an essential element in attaining high achievement.  The students of West Side Primary Center not only passed the PSSA and attained Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the third year in a row, but their scores surpassed the state average by 17%.  I am sure we will have another outstanding year this year.

Once again, thank you for all that you do to assist your child, the staff, and me.  Together we will ensure that your child has a successful academic experience at West Side Primary Center.

Please feel free to contact me at any time with any questions or concerns you may have.  I look forward to another exciting year with all of you.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. Carmen Nocera
Principal

Mrs. Tropea's & Mrs. Krarup's Mother's Day Program Print
Mrs. Tropea's and Mrs. Krarup's classes welcomed their mothers, grandmothers, and a few dads to a special Mother's Day program.  The students created a four-square telling about the many ways their moms are special.  They also made picture frames and book marks for their moms to keep and treasure for years to come.  A nice surprise for their special someone was the slide show presented on the big screen, in which each student told their mom (or their special person)  what they loved best about them.  Some even told funny stories that brought smiles to the audience.  This program was a small token to show how much moms, grandmas, aunts, and dads are thought of and appreciated each and every day!

A Mother's Day Celebration Print

On June 7th, the children in Mrs. N. Joseph’s and Miss Smith’s classes serenaded their moms during their Mother's Day Celebration.   After escorting their mothers down the hall on a "red carpet," each child presented his or her mother with a flower. The children also sang songs, read poems, and showered their moms with gifts.  Each mom received a cookbook made by the first grader students.  The book contained a recipe dictated by the children.  These "recipes" provided instructions for cooking a favorite meal that mom has cooked.  The children also presented their moms with a hanging flower pot imprinted with their handprints.

Judging by the smiles on all of their faces, Mrs. N. Joseph and Miss Smith know that the program will provide lasting memories for both the children and their moms.

Earth Day 2010 Print

The students in Miss Smith’s class spent the week celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day. To start off, the first graders wrote a 4-Square telling ways they would help keep the Earth clean. The students said they would pick up litter, and some even chose to turn off the water when they brush their teeth.

Along with reading many books about Earth Day, each student had a chance to make their own mini-book about this special holiday. The boys and girls also found some more interesting facts in their Scholastic News.  Miss Smith’s class created their own Earths using coffee filters, markers and a little water. The class also had a chance to team up with the students in Mrs. N. Joseph’s class to watch the movie The Lorax. Next, the students had a class discussion and answered questions about the movie when it was over. Then, both classes got to meet Fred, the fish. Fred is a fish that travels along a river but is affected by all the garbage and waste people empty into the water. The children were able to see how water pollution can hurt not only our water but the animals that live in it.

Spring Sings! Print
The sweet song of a bird, a sign that good weather is approaching, is a very familiar sound in spring.  Mrs. Antal’s class is celebrating the season with spring poetry.  The class began by brainstorming activities that begin or occur in spring.  Some of these events included flowers blooming, winds whistling, and baseball batting.  Then, using a poem model including various parts of speech as a guide, the boys and girls wrote an original spring poem. The students then created nesting birds in a tree using yellow pompoms, brown shredded paper, feathers and note stickers on a sheet of blue construction paper.  The “singing” birds provided the perfect backdrop to mount their spring poetry and welcome the warmer weather.
