A Virtual Field Trip with the Magic School Bus |
Students in Miss Wiseman’s third grade class celebrated Earth Day a few days early by taking a virtual field trip with Mrs. Frizzle and the Magic School Bus On Tuesday April 20, 2010. The students and Miss Wiseman viewed a web cast presented by Scholastic on the Scholastic website through the use of their new classroom Netbook and projector. For the web cast, Mrs. Frizzle and a few of her students introduced the newest Magic School Bus book the Climate Challenge from the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Working Hard at Work and Play |
During the weeks of April 5 through April 17, 2010, the students at Thaddeus Stevens Primary Center worked diligently to complete their state testing for this school year. In the afternoons, as a special reward for the students extra efforts, they were treated to some special testing week activities. On Wednesday April 7th, students in grade three had the opportunity to head out to the playground for a special “Chalk on the Walk” Activity. Each third grade class created their very own mural on the playground. Using chalk each student contributed their creative part to their class mural. Some of the murals were Spring inspired along with an outer space mural complete with stars and planets!

Volcano Eruption |
After reading the Science lesson “How Volcanoes and Earthquakes change the Earth,” Miss Rupert’s third grade class got to make their own volcanoes and watch them erupt. The students were split into groups to form their volcanoes out of clay around a water bottle. The volcanoes sat for a day to harden. The next day, the students put baking soda, dish soap, and red food coloring inside their volcano. Then they added vinegar to make the eruption. The students really enjoyed this experiment.

3-2-1 Blast Off |
The students at Thaddeus Stevens were very excited to blast into the Scholastic Reading Counts reading promotion. For this promotion, students in all grade levels will be participating. Each classroom has been given a rocket ship which will be used to track the reading progress for each classroom. As students read books and successfully pass the corresponding SRC quizzes, they will receive stickers for their individual chart and vouchers to be used at the SRC store.
