The New Castle Junior/Senior High School's Student Assistance Program (SAP) is part of a state-wide initiative designed to help school systems identify and support students who are experiencing barriers to learning. Some examples of barriers to learning are: change in friends, unexplained drop in grades or academic issues, depression/anxiety, aggressive behavior, divorce, and bullying.
At the core of the Student Assistance is a team of teachers, counselors, nurses, administrators, and community agency staff who have received specialized training from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to work with at-risk students. This team is commonly referred to as the "SAP" team or "CORE" team. The SAP team at the New Castle Jr./Sr. High School is comprised of two teams which target students in grades 7-12. The number one priority for each team is to help students and/or their families find the services and assistance within the school and, if needed, in the community.
Students come to the SAP team in different ways. Anyone can refer a student to the Student Assistance Program. Some students are referred by teachers, others by fellow students, and some by a family member. A student himself/herself can even go directly to the SAP team to ask for help. However, the SAP team will not become involved unless parent/guardian permission is secure. The SAP team and the school will respect you and your child's privacy at all times.
*If you would like to refer a student to the Core Team, please complete the forms under LINKS in the menu to the right and submit it to the guidance office.
