School Wide Positive Behavioral Supports

SWPBIS stands for School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. It is a program that focuses on prevention through the creation of a school culture that is positive, safe, predictable and consistent.

The goal of SWPBIS is to create a social culture in our school that will encourage positive behavior and interactions while discouraging problem behaviors. This social culture will lead to a safe environment where students achieve academically and build positive relationships with each other and adults. The foundation of the approach emphasizes teaching students the behaviors we expect to see, providing reminders when needed, and acknowledging expected behaviors.  At GW our motto is:

Students will earn GW Tickets.  Tickets  are a way of increasing student motivation and adding another layer of reinforcement to the praise you are delivering.  In short, tickets are fun and increase students' motivation to make a good choice. Whether a small behavior (e.g., holding the door) or a big behavior (e.g., helping a friend who is being bullied) tickets can help us reinforce the kinds of student behaviors we want to see. Among the benefits of using a ticket system include:

  1. Encouraging students to continue engaging in positive behaviors.
  2. Reinforcing the benefit of making good choice, so that when a student faces a ‘tempting’ bad choice they have the history of positive interactions with staff to firm up their resolve.
  3. Encouraging students working on a behavior improvement goal to keep trying.
  4. Contributes to the development of positive adult-student relationships.

Principal's Club 200

The P200Club is a school-wide all positive, prevention focused intervention. It applies to all students, all staff and all settings. It consists of several evidence based behavior management practices. Specifically it utilizes: 1) verbal praise, 2) public posting, 3) the Mystery Motivator, 4) a variable reinforcement schedule and 5) a group contingency

Students can receive a principals 200 club ticket for meeting a school-wide expectation.  (Example- showing respect to peers and adults)    Next, have the student draw a number that corresponds with a space on the P200 Club board. When the student has picked a number that individual’s name will go on the P200 Club Board in the corresponding space. Lastly, plan and provide a party or other reward for the individuals whose names complete 10 in a row on the P200 Club Board. Then names can be removed from the board and the process repeated.
